WHAT!, NOW?
I hoped for a cannonball!
I got a spitball!
This is the present state of every student on OAU campus right now.
School activities have been rudely put on hold and many seemed to be tipped off balance! An article once read: "We are wired as meaning makers".
If we cannot find positive sources of meaning, we often gravitate to negative ones, amplifying our social, emotional, and physical concerns.
I almost decided to learn fashion design! Now that was good right? Only that I knew it wasn't good for me, I had no desire whatsoever for the craft but I was desperate because I simply wanted to look "busy". And fashion designing seemed plausible.
Positive psychology aptly says that we experience stress and distress when our lives lack positive ingredients as happiness, fulfilment and energy.
This explains why People are scrambling about to do one thing or the other, just so to make sense out of a nonsense situation.
Unfortunately, though, some people are hastily engaged in the wrong things or even the right venture but for the wrong reasons. Some, like me, didn't want to be the unserious student, they needed to look busy!
Some, without thorough thinking, delve into an affair but can't seem to find satisfaction. While some just decided to follow the bandwagon ( everyone else is doing this, why can't I? ) A host of others simply wanted to make money, period!
"A friend of mine went to the market, prepared a sumptuous meal, then a friend came and insisted she must have a taste of the food!
She obliged, the aroma attracted a neighbor and she brought her plate too, not long, the pot of soup was completely cleared!
The soup was exhausted in a matter of hours!"
I looked at her face, and I could see nothing but fulfillment, she felt a sense of purpose sharing a meal that could have lasted her for a whole week with others!
Most of the time, the little things matter the most. While aiming for the big guns to make up for a deficit situation could be quite impressive and commendable;
The little things however, go a long way in establishing meaningfulness and eliciting happiness.
Therefore, in this season, You don't have to have everything figured out all at once, If helping out the people around you on a daily basis is what you can afford to do now, do it!
If you have the capacity and the right mindset to achieve the big ideas, do it!
Anything you're doing that stirs happiness, lowers your level of stress hormones, gives you overall wholesomeness; no matter how little or seemingly inconsequential. Ride with it! You're doing well.
Purpose is first, personally meaningful, then, subsequently leads to productive engagement with some aspect of the world beyond the self.
