“The only way to outdo, to outperform the competition is to offer something unique and something better than they have.” -Tim Soulo, Head of Marketing and Product Strategy at AHREFs

This lockdown unlocked the entrepreneurial spirit in majority of us. It got to a point that more than half of my contact list were selling something; from clothes to bangles, scarf, data, anything that would sustain body and soul. What many vendors fail to understand is that its not enough to make a customer buy your product, are they really happy buying the product? The best reference you can get is from a happy buyer. There's this seller currently in my class that sells shirts and other kind of clothings. i have seen more than 3 of my coursemates flaunt this product to class, i see the smiles on thier faces as people compliment the shirts they are putting on.

Persuasion in marketing involves the ability not just to influence people’s actions, but their attitude as well. Its about making potential customers make a purchase without feeling like they are being sold to. It should not be about selling a shirt to a customer; you could go an extra mile by giving them ideas about the best skirt or trouser to go with the shirt, the kind of shoes, jackets or even makeup to go with them.

I read a story about a waiter who made so much money from getting tips. When he was quizzed about the reason he got so much tips, he explained that he did not just take orders from customers, he would reveal which food on the menu was whack and which was very tasty. This waiter moved on to telling customers that came for a date which drink would be perfect for the occasion. He offered so much assistance that made ordering really easy. Here are the 5 methods he used:

1.      Structured conversation: Immediately a potential customer sends a message, its your job to direct the conversation, but it has to be in line with his desire. Like the waiter, you could use this opportunity to make the buyer comfortable by asking about the occasion the snickers are for, complement his choice of color. The goal of this method is making the buyer make the purchase.

2.      Story telling: There was a time I was looking for a shoe that was actually my size, I entered a shop and while I was still asking if he was sure he had my size, he explained that he even had some bigger than mine and that he only focuses on shoes that were around my size and higher. Till this day, he’s my number one shoe plug.

3.      Copyrighting: This involves using the right words and phrases for headings, captions, product descriptions, and other text. Does your write up motivate me to want to send you a DM? people are mostly moved when they know that a product has a limited number or a particular price has an expiry date.

4.      Use influential Referrals: People are more inclined to buy your product when the President of this association puts it on his status. People with influence or authority have followers that aspire to be like them, so these followers would likely buy your product just to level up.

“If you just help your customers, or help your buyers buy, and answer the questions that they have in that journey, then you can really succeed.” -Michael Brenner, CEO of Marketing Insider Group and co-author of The Content Formula.

5.      Help your customers: Even when you don’t have the product, be kind enough to refer the customer to someone that does, you could even go as far as helping the person bargain and also facilitate the delivery. They are bound to return because you have helped them.
